Ken Lain, the Top 10 Gardener, here! Your go-to guide for all things gardening. If you're seeing yellow leaves this summer, don't panic. It's common, especially during these hot months, and usually means your plants are thirsty or need a little boost of nutrients. The technical term is Chlorosis, which means a yellowing of normally green leaves due to a lack of chlorophyll.

So, what should you do?

1. Water deeply: A good soak once a week is key, especially for trees and shrubs. Don't just sprinkle the surface; water slowly and deeply until the soil is moist.
2. Fertilize: After watering, give your plants a boost with a balanced fertilizer. This will replenish the nutrients they need to stay green and healthy.

Remember, the best fertilizer is often Mother Nature's own—rainwater. Rainwater's natural pH helps release nutrients in the soil, so after you fertilize, let the rain do its thing!

🪴The Best of the Summer Blooming Shrubs in the Backyard 🪴

Ken & Lisa Lain, the Top 10 Gardeners, here! We're diving into the best summer-blooming shrubs for your backyard.

Let’s start with Moscheutos Hibiscus, a robust cousin of the Rose of Sharon. Unlike its relative, Moscheutos resets underground each year, growing to hip height and width. It’s a tremendous grower, setting spectacular flowers from now through fall. Also known as the Confederate Rose, its Latin name is Hibiscus mutabilis. This shrub is a showstopper, perfect for adding a splash of color and unique charm to your garden.

Another standout is Caryopteris, also known as bluebeard or false spirea. This plant is not only beautiful but also a great pollinator attractor. If you're looking to bring bees and butterflies into your garden, Caryopteris is the way to go. It resembles Russian sage but is more shapely and less weedy, blooming just as well, if not better. Its vibrant blue flowers and aromatic foliage make it an excellent alternative to Russian sage.

Both Moscheutos Hibiscus and Caryopteris are in limited supply and available at garden centers now.

🌼Coaching Flowers to Bloom Again and Again 🌼

Ken Lain, the Top 10 Gardener, here! Let's dive into the art of coaching your flowers to bloom again and again.

Imagine a garden where flowers like yarrow, meadow sage, and Jupiter's beard are in constant bloom. It's possible with a few simple steps! As your blooms start to fade, grab your shears and deadhead those spent flowers. This encourages the plant to produce more blooms instead of focusing on seed production.

Next, feed your plants with an all-purpose plant food (7-4-4) to provide essential nutrients. To really boost flowering, add super phosphate (0-18-0). This high middle number in the fertilizer encourages robust flower production. With a little rain or a quick watering, you'll see a vibrant display of blooms in just a few weeks.

Don't forget to experiment with new plants in your garden. One of my new favorites is Merlot Euphorbia. This hardy perennial is part of the same family as gopher plant and gopher spurge but offers stunning purple foliage that adds a pop of color year-round. It's drought-resistant and perfect for rock gardens and sunny spots.

Remember, a well-tended garden is a blooming garden. Keep deadheading, feeding, and trying new varieties to enjoy a colorful and lively garden all season long.

🌺How to Grow a Backyard Crape Myrtle 🌺

Hey there, Watters friends! Ken and Lisa Lain here, Growing a backyard Crepe Myrtle is a rewarding journey that transforms your garden with vibrant blooms and lush foliage.

Start by choosing the right variety for your climate. Look for hardy options like 'Dynamite' or 'Tonto,' which thrive in both heat and cold. Plant your Crepe Myrtle in a sunny spot with well-drained soil, ensuring it gets at least six hours of sunlight daily.

Water deeply but infrequently to establish strong roots. Prune in late winter to shape and encourage growth, cutting back any dead or weak branches. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.

Remember, extreme temperatures can turn a Crepe Myrtle tree into a bush. Instead of investing in a tree, consider purchasing a bush variety, which is more suited to handle the temperature fluctuations and will still provide beautiful blooms.

🌿The Dirty Little Secret about Vinegar as a Weed Killer 🌿

Ken Lain, the Top 10 Gardener, here! Let's talk about vinegar as a weed killer.

Vinegar can be a handy tool for getting rid of small weeds, but there's a catch: vinegar alone might not be strong enough to tackle the whole job. Vinegar can be effective in killing small weeds and young weeds, but it mostly targets the leaves and won't kill the roots. That means those pesky weeds will be back in no time!

Here at Watters, we recommend a safer option: Decimate. This product kills the entire plant, roots and all, and is much more effective in the long run. Plus, it's safer for you, your pets, and the environment.

🌳What Yellowing Leaves Mean for Summer Trees 🌳

Hey there, Watters friends! Ken and Lisa Lain here, and I know some of you might be seeing yellow leaves on your summer trees. Let me tell you, it's not always a sign of fall coming early.

Those pale leaves could be a cry for help from a hungry tree! Sometimes, our summer beauties struggle with iron deficiency, especially if the soil's pH is a little high. But don't worry, there's a simple solution!

Head down to Watters and grab a bag of soil sulfur. It'll help lower that pH and get your tree back on track. Plus, throw in some of our fantastic 7-4-4 All-Purpose Food to really give it a boost.

Ken Lain, the Top 10 Gardener, here! The monsoon season is in full swing here in Northern Arizona, and the difference in plant growth is astonishing. It's not just the rain, but the humidity, shade, and charged atmosphere that make plants go wild.

Summer rain is like a second growing season. It's easier to start plants now than in spring. The warm, moist soil is perfect for trees, shrubs, and fruit trees. The increased humidity also helps existing plants thrive.

This week, I measured over two inches of rain in my gardens! Did you know that the average thundercloud dumps nearly 300,000 gallons of water? That's almost an acre-foot of rain!

Now is the time to take advantage of the monsoon season. Trim back your perennials, clean up your annuals, and fertilize for a second flush of blooms. If you have new plants, give them a boost with humic acid. It activates the soil, attracting beneficial microbes and encouraging strong root growth.
