🌼Bloomers of Early Spring
Wednesday Mar 26, 2025
Wednesday Mar 26, 2025
Ken Lain Here, The Mountain Gardener! Spring's arrival paints our mountain landscapes with vibrant hues.
Right now, you'll see forsythia's sun-kissed yellow and the striking pink blooms of ornamental plums – a true spectacle before the leaves emerge. Remember, these early bloomers are often ornamental, not fruit-producing.
If you’re craving homegrown plums, look for varieties like Elephant Heart or Santa Rosa, which bloom a bit later. Notice the redbuds and lilacs popping up, too!
This is the perfect moment to explore your neighborhood, snap photos of what catches your eye, and bring them to Watters Garden Center. We can help you select the perfect plants for your space, ensuring your garden thrives with style and beauty. Think of us as your garden mentors, guiding you to cultivate a landscape that brings joy and lasting memories, just like those salted plums of my childhood.

🌲Atlas Cedar and Deodar Cedar – What’s the Difference
Tuesday Mar 25, 2025
Tuesday Mar 25, 2025
We're back with Lisa Waters Lain, answering your garden questions! This weekend's buzz was all about spring planting, and many are eager to get started. Remember, while you can plant trees, shrubs, and perennials like lilacs and forsythia now, hold off on tomatoes until after the first week of May to avoid frost damage.
Shelly asked about the difference between Atlas and Deodar cedars. Both are large, beautiful trees, ideal for privacy screens. Atlas cedars, like the one at the courthouse, have a blue hue and distinct layering. Deodar cedars are greener with softer, fuller growth, especially when young. Both reach impressive sizes, but Deodar often appears fuller initially. For large screening, consider either, keeping in mind their eventual size.

🌄Top 10 Garden Shortcuts of Spring That Make Gardens Better
Friday Mar 14, 2025
Friday Mar 14, 2025
Hey gardeners, Ken Lain here! Spring's energy is calling!
Now's the time to finish pruning, removing winter mulch, and cleaning up debris to allow new growth to flourish. Fertilize everything with Watters 7-4-4 All-Purpose Plant Food, a natural blend that feeds plants deeply. Combat weeds with a pre-emergent weed and grass stopper, saving you hours of weeding. Add a layer of deodorized manure to enrich soil and boost growth.
For lawns, alternate Watters 7-4-4 with Humic Acid monthly to create a lush, weed-free carpet without the need for aeration or dethatching. These simple steps will transform your garden, ensuring a vibrant and healthy landscape all season long.

Looking to create a lush, living privacy screen in your yard? Hedges are a fantastic way to add beauty, define spaces, and block unwanted views. At Watters Garden Center, we have a wide variety of hedge plants, so you're sure to find the perfect fit for your landscape.
Some of my top picks include Euonymus, with its versatile colors and forms, and Nandina, which adds texture and color with its graceful foliage. Silverberries are a rugged native option that boasts fragrant blooms and silvery foliage. For a classic look, consider Boxwood or Privet, offering dense, evergreen foliage that can be easily shaped.
If you're looking for something a bit different, Viburnum offers a variety of forms and foliage colors, while Yew is a shade-tolerant and deer-resistant option. Arborvitae is a great choice for taller screens or windbreaks. And don't forget about Holly, with its classic evergreen foliage and colorful berries.
No matter your style or needs, we can help you find the perfect hedge plants to create a private and beautiful outdoor space.
